A black bullmastiff is crossbreed of a mastiff and a bulldog that is black in color, though bullmastiffs usually have brindle, red or fawn coats. This is a large dog that can weigh up to 130 pounds and reach 27 inches in height.
The bullmastiff resembles both a bulldog and a mastiff. It has a powerful, square body, reminiscent of both breeds. Its calm temperament and fierce courage make the bullmastiff a great guard dog. It is loyal, devoted and a good guardian. It was originally bred to be a guard dog, with the guarding instincts of the bulldog and the power of the mastiff.
A bullmastiff requires regular exercise in order to stay in shape, although it does not deal well with heat and humidity. Because of its large size, this dog needs plenty of room to run around and rest. Owners should purchase a soft dog bed and place it in an area where the bullmastiff can stretch out. The bullmastiff has a short coat and does not require much grooming.
A bullmastiff lives up to 10 years, though it can develop many health issues. Some of these include tumors, cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia. It needs to be examed by a veterinarian regularly.
