Komodo dragons live in tropical savannas. They are only found naturally on Komodo Island and a few other islands in Indonesia and are the largest member of the lizard species.
Growing to an average length of 6.5 to 10 feet, Komodo dragons prefer hot, dry places. They dominate the area in which they live, as there are no other carnivorous animals on the islands. They feed primarily on carrion and occasionally hunt mammals and birds; however, the Komodo dragon has a slow metabolism and does not need to feed very often. It can eat 80 percent of its body weight during one feeding.
