More powerful magnification is not always better because it narrows the field of view and makes locating the bird more difficult. The image is less bright, there is less depth of view and, unless the binoculars are attached to a tripod, it is difficult to hold them steady.

The wider the field of view, the more likely that the bird is immediately in view when the binoculars are raised.
