The Akita can grow up to 28 inches at the shoulder in height, and weigh up to 130 pounds. Males are slightly taller than females, and many males reach or exceed 100 pounds in weight.
The Animal Kennel Club considers the Akita Inu a large-size dog. Dogs of this breed can grow to a full adult height of between 25 and 28 inches, and weigh between 70 and 130 pounds. Due to its size, strength, willfulness and loyalty, they are considered good guard dogs and hunters.
The Akita closely resembles the medium-sized Shiba Inu, though the two differ in coat type and dog group as well as size: the Akita is a working dog with a rough coat, while the Shiba is a non-sporting dog with a corded or fine coat. Both breeds are native Japanese spitz-type dogs.
