Both male and female beagles grow to a height of 13 to 15 inches at the shoulders. As adults, they weight between 18 and 30 pounds.
Beagles have friendly personalities and tend to get along well with both humans and other animals. If they get sufficient exercise, they are gentle and lovable, which makes them good pets for children. They are vocal animals, barking and howling when the need arises. Beagles were traditionally hunting dogs and often worked in packs. Their small size allows them to chase animals in the underbrush and over rough land, and when prey is found, the beagle's loud baying makes it easy for the hunters to locate them.
