A Basset Hound is a short-legged and comparatively heavy dog. It has a long, heavy body with very long ears and originated in France as a hunting dog.
The Basset Hound excels at obedience, field trials and pack hunting. It is also renowned for its tracking abilities. This well-behaved breed makes a good family pet because it is friendly and docile. However, the Basset Hound requires firm and consistent behavioral training to avoid stubbornness. Additionally, it is easily distracted by interesting scents, which makes it difficult to get its attention at times. Female Basset Hounds weigh between 45 and 60 pounds, while males weigh between 50 and 65 pounds.
