Full Answer

Meerkats live in groups of 25 to 50 called gangs or mobs. The groups are led by an alpha pair, with the female being the most dominant. Pups sustain the social unit by remaining with the group upon reaching adulthood. Meerkats are very protective of other group members and serve as lookouts, scanning the area for predators and warning the group when danger is near.

The meerkat diet consists of insects, small rodents, fruit, birds, eggs, lizards and small scorpions. They store very little energy and must forage and hunt daily.
