A male pig is known as a boar, while a female pig that has not yet given birth is known as a gilt. Once the female has one litter of babies, she is known as a sow. Baby pigs are known as piglets.
The pig is a very intelligent animal that ranks fourth behind the chimpanzee, dolphin and elephant in terms of intelligence. A baby piglet knows its name and responds to its name by three weeks of age.
The pig's period of gestation is around 114 days. Sows give birth to as many as 12 piglets, and most have two litters per year. Baby pigs are usually weaned by the time they are 3 months old.
