Animax is used for treating skin disorders such as dermatitis in dogs and cats, according to 1-800-petmeds. It is the generic form of Panolog ointment.
Animax is an ointment that must be prescribed by a vet. It aids in clearing up bacterial and fungal skin infections. The medication has been proven to treat dermatitis, eczema and other skin disorders characterized by dry, swollen skin. Animax contains three main ingredients: Nystatin, Neomycin Sulfate and Triamcinolone Acetonide. The Triamciolone Acetonide is a numbing agent that sends quick relief to the area when applied. The other two medications fight off bacteria and fungus, helping the skin infection clear quickly. This ointment should not be used if the dog or cat is on any other antibiotics and a vet should be notified of any other medication the animal is on. While Animax is FDA approved, it does have a few side effects. These include swollen and irritated skin, frequent urination, vomiting and diarrhea. In pregnant dogs, Animax sometimes causes premature birth and birth defects. Consult a veterinarian if the animal begins acting strangely or exhibits any odd symptoms. The medication may be prescribed to be used once a week to several times a day, depending on how severe the infection is. The dosage may also change as the infection begins to clear up.
