Pandas rarely eat anything other than bamboo shoots, stems and leaves. When pandas do eat other foods, less than 1 percent of their diet is composed of other plants and meat. The diet of the panda is almost exclusively vegetarian, although panda sometimes eat small rodents, such as pikas.
Panda have evolved to almost eat bamboo exclusively. This reliance on bamboo leaves the panda vulnerable to habitat loss, which is a threat to the panda's overall survival rate.
Because bamboo has very little to offer the panda nutritionally, it must eat a lot of bamboo each day to maintain its energy levels.
