What Animal Has the Most Eyes?

Though their eyes may not function or appear the same as most other eyes in the animal kingdom, the sea scallop may be the animal with the most eyes. The scallop has hundreds of tiny eyes attached to its mantle, which appears at the outer edge of each of this bivalve's two shells.

Anatomically speaking, these eye spots are relatively simple, consisting of a lens and retina that attach to an optic nerve. Though they're simple, these tiny blue eyes are numerous and effective; if a scallop sees so much as a shadow passing overhead, it will swim away by flapping its two shells together.
