The term "AKC ranking" refers to the American Kennel Club's yearly list of most popular breeds. This list reflects the number of puppies of each breed that are registered each year with the AKC.
The breed with the most puppies registered is given the number one rank, the breed with the second-most puppies registered is given the number two rank, and so on down the entire list of breeds recognized by the AKC. The number one breed for 23 years in a row now, as of 2014, has been the Labrador retriever. Golden retrievers, German shepherds, beagles and bulldogs are often ranked in the top five breeds every year as well.
