The African butterfly fish is a fish that is common in African lakes. When viewed from above, its pectoral fins resemble a butterfly's wings. The African butterfly fish has a dark brown or black body with speckles, and it is 1.5 to 3 inches long.
This fish spends much of the time lying motionless on the surface of the water waiting for prey. With eyes located on top of the head, the African butterfly fish has an excellent view. When its fins are spread out, the fish glides through the water easily. The fins help the African butterfly fish jump to snatch insects off overhanging leaves or branches.
