Adopting a rescue dachshund in Illinois is often as simple as a trip to the local shelter. However, you cannot be sure that the shelter has this particular breed. To search a database of available dachshunds in Illinois and surrounding areas, consult the Dachshund Rescue of North America.
The Dachshund Rescue of North America is a 501c3 non-profit organization that serves North America, with the exceptions of the West Coast, Southwest and the majority of Canada. They have successfully placed over 8,000 dachshunds into loving homes.
To adopt from the Dachshund Rescue of North America, the applicant must be 21 years old and complete an adoption application. Once the application is reviewed and both personal and veterinary references are checked, a representative for the rescue visits the home to ensure the conditions are safe for a dog. If the home visit goes well, the rescue takes steps to decide which adoptable dachshund is best for the applicant.
An adoption contract is then completed, and an adoption fee—ranging from $150 for dogs 10 years of age or older to $350 for puppies younger than a year, as of 2015—is paid. Dachshund Rescue of North America then arranges transportation to take the dog to its new home.
