When learning how to divide, start with more simple division methods involving dividends no longer than two or three digits. Eventually work towards more complex methods, such as simple division with a remainder, long division with a decimal, and using a divisor that has more than one digit.Continue Reading
When practicing simple division, the first step is to set up the problem by writing the dividend on the right underneath the division symbol and the divisor outside on the left. Leave plenty of room underneath to carry out the equation and any necessary calculations. Work from left to right, starting by dividing the first digit of the dividend to see how many times the divisor can factor into it, and write this number above the division symbol. Next, see how many times the divisor can go into the first two digits of the dividend, and enter the answer at the top once again. Multiply the divisor by the answer, and write the result below the dividend, aligning the numbers left to right.
Draw a line at the bottom, subtract the previous result from the first two digits of the dividend, and write the result below the line. Write down the next number of the dividend if there is one. If the dividend has more than three digits, repeat this whole process until you have worked through all of the digits.Learn more about Arithmetic
