A frequency table is a mathematical graph that identifies the number of times pieces of data occur in a given sequence. Most frequency tables contain three columns and between five and ten rows.
The first column lists the separate pieces of data. If the data components are numerical values, the information in the first column is listed in ascending order. If the pieces of data cover a wide range of numbers, then the data in the first column is divided into intervals. In a test that measures scores from one to 100, for example, an individual might begin the first column with 0-10, then move to 11-20 and so forth. The second column in a frequency table tallies the number of instances a data value occurs. After each data or data interval is tallied, the third and final column puts the overall tally for each piece of data into numerical form.
