In statistics, error propagation (also known as propagation of uncertainty) refers to the process used in determining the uncertainty of results obtained from a given calculation. Finding the error and calculating the ambiguity is essential in establishing the validity of the result.

Uncertainty can arise from a variety of factors: sample difference, instrument variability, different observers and even time of day when the measurement was being taken. As such, for any calculation that utilizes more than one measured variable, it is essential to find the error propagation in order to determine the level of uncertainty.
