Discrete mathematics is a branch of mathematics dealing with structures that are basically discrete rather than continuous. Discrete items are those that are distinctly separated from each other. Discrete mathematics deals with countable objects.

Discrete items are often enumerated by integers. Continuous mathematics, on the other hand, is a branch of mathematics dealing with items that vary smoothly. Calculus and real numbers such as irrational and some rational numbers are called continuous numbers.
