Red wine discolors clothing quickly and causes permanent damage if the stain isn't properly treated. If red wine spills on your clothing, you can remove the stain quickly and easily using a clean white cloth, salt, liquid laundry detergent, and a stain remover stick, gel or spray.
Flush the stain with cold water
For best results, first treat red wine stains on clothing immediately by rinsing the stain with cold water. It's best to rinse through the back of the stain if possible. After rinsing, use a clean white cloth to blot the stain and soak up any remaining liquid.
Salt the stain
Apply salt directly on the stain and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes. Then, rub the stain between your fingers while rinsing under cold water. Repeat the salt and rinse sequence until the stain is gone.
Treat with liquid laundry detergent
Apply liquid laundry detergent to the stain, and rub it in. Allow the detergent to remain on the fabric for 3 to 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly under cold water. If desired, apply a stain remover stick, gel or spray to the stained area, and wash the clothing as directed on the care label.
