Most counties and municipalities have regular bulk waste collection schedules, but many offer collection services by appointment through calling the local waste management system's hotline or completing an online appointment form. Some counties and cities may only collect scheduled bulk waste and may refuse to collect unscheduled items.
Cities and counties such as Washington, D.C. and Prince George's County in Maryland collect bulk trash by appointment only. In Washington DC, residents can schedule a bulk trash pickup by calling the Mayor's citywide call center. Collection is usually available 10 to 14 days after setting an appointment. Prince George's County allows residents to schedule an appointment by calling the city's hotline or by submitting a bulk trash online scheduling form.
Cities such as Phoenix and San Antonio have regular schedules for bulk waste collection. Phoenix distributes fliers and provides downloadable and viewable bulk trash pickup collection information for a whole year, while San Antonio distributes fliers to residents one week before the scheduled bulky item collection in their area. Because the latter only collects bulk trash twice a year, the city also offers out-of-cycle collection, allowing residents and commercial businesses to schedule a bulk trash pickup. After the Solid Waste Management Department's staff estimates the cost of the collection and disposal, the requester pays for the service and the local department collects the items.
