Laminate counter tops can be cut with different types of power saws or handsaws, such as circular saws. The blade must be fine-grade for plastic laminate materials. It is important not to cut too much of the counter top, as there should be a one-inch overhang.
Before using a saw to cut the counter top, apply masking tape over the selected area to prevent splintering. A cut line is first made with a pencil, allowing an even line, and then covered with masking tape. The line should be scored first with a utility knife, going directly through the masking tape. Saw the scored line next, being sure there is adequate support on both sides of the counter top when the final cut is being made.
