Begin removing cat urine from wood furniture as soon as it is found by cleaning the wood with a mixture of oil soap and water. Follow the soap manufacturer’s directions for mixing the cleaning solution. Dry the soap from the wood, and polish the surface with pure orange oil, which also helps to neutralize the odor.
Cat urine has a very strong odor that often lasts even after removing any visible stains. If the oil soap and orange oil treatment do not remove all the smell, wash the area with a mixture of equal parts of vinegar and water with a squirt of dishwashing liquid added. Allow the solution to dry in place, and then rinse with clear water. Dry with a clean rag. Cover the area with a liberal amount of baking soda, and let it stand several hours or overnight to absorb any remaining odors. Repeat the process several times until the odor is gone.
If the home remedies do not remove the odor, try an enzymatic pet urine cleaner from the pet store. These enzymes break down the chemicals responsible for the odor. Choose a cleaner that is safe for use on wood, and follow the directions on the label.
