Sharpening mower blades is a relatively simple task and can even be accomplished by manually sharpening the blades with a mill bastard file. It is also a good idea to purchase a spare blade just in case the old blade is no longer serviceable.Continue Reading
The following shows a simple way of sharpening a lawn mower blade.
Step 1: Safety first
Before removing the blades from the lawn mover, remove the spark plug to ensure that it does not start on its own by accident.
Step 2: Make your mark
Make a mark on one side of the blade using spray paint or any other preferred marker before removing the blade. The mark will serve as a guide that will show the proper orientation and side of the blade when its time to reattach it to the motor. If the blade reattaches in the wrong way, it will not be able to cut the grass properly.
Step 3: Examine
Check the blade to see if it is practical to sharpen and use it. If it has too many nicks, curls and damages, it may be time to replace it.
Step 4: Sharpen
If the blade is still usable, secure it on a bench clamp and start working on the blade with the mill bastard file. Lawn mower blade metals are relatively soft and can be sharpened with less than 50 strokes.
Step 5: Reattach
Reattach the blade securely to the motor after sharpening both blades, and then reconnect the spark plug.Learn more about Tools
