What Is the Way to Scotchgard a Carpet?

A commercial sprayer is used to apply a diluted mix of Scotchgard and water to the clean carpet surface. Scotchgard can be used on new or used carpets to protect against further soiling.

Scotchgard is a chemical that forms a molecular shield around carpet and fabric fibers. Intended to be a long-lasting form of protection against spills and stains, Scotchgard can be applied by a professional carpet cleaner service or by a do-it-yourselfer with the right equipment.

  1. Prepare the mixture
  2. Fill the tank of a commercial sprayer with Scotchgard concentrate and warm water at a ratio of 1:4. One liter of the mixture should completely cover 53 square feet of commercial grade carpet and 26 square feet of plush carpet.
  3. Clean the carpet
  4. Vacuum and deep clean a used or soiled carpet before applying the Scotchgard protection. Allow the carpet time a day or two to dry completely after deep cleaning. If the carpet is brand new there is no need to clean it.
  5. Apply the protector
  6. Hold the nozzle of the sprayer about 12 inches from the surface of the carpet. Spray the carpet in broad, even sweeps overlapping the previous sweep about half way with each new sweep. Use up the entire amount of the diluted mixture as measured for the square footage of carpeting.
  7. Allow carpet to dry
  8. Wait 6 to 12 hours for the carpet to dry. Treat carefully for 3 to 4 days until the full Scotchgard protection develops on the carpet.
