The main types of water pumps are displacement pumps, submersible pumps and centrifugal pumps. While there are also other varieties of water pumps, these are the ones seen most often.
A displacement pump is one that uses a displacement system to force the water out of the basement following a flood. Displacement pumps include pumps like diaphragm pumps, piston pumps and rotary pumps. Centrifugal water pumps include nearly all irrigation pumps. There is a propeller in this type of pump that causes the water to spin at a rapid pace to move the water through the pump. Submersible pumps can be installed underwater, as the name suggests. The motor and all parts of the pump go underwater to remove water from a lake, river or well.
