Waffle irons have short cords to minimize the risk of the user tripping over or getting entangled in the cord while cooking. Unlike a coffeemaker where the user can walk away while the coffee is brewing, a person making waffles stays close to the appliance while it's working.
Extension cords may be used but the cord must have the same electrical rating as the waffle maker. If the waffle cord has a three-prong grounded plug, the extension cord must have the same plug. Users wanting or needing an extension cord should tuck them safely away so they can't be accidentally run into by children or pets.
