Cowhide upholstery is used for car seats, garments, restoration, lightweight handbags, purses and wallets, notes Waterhouse Leather. Cowhide upholstery fabric is a lightweight leather that stands up to normal wear.
To use cowhide leather for upholstery, tailoring or crafting, check the hide for flaws, such as scratches or thin spots; if any are present, avoid placing them in high stress or highly visible areas on the item. Use heavy duty or upholstery shears to cut the hide. Avoid pins and use either a heavy duty or industrial sewing machine with a large gauge needle installed, such as a size 14.
