To use a stencil on kitchen tile, clean the tile thoroughly with soapy water, rinse the tile, and allow it to dry before cleaning the tile with a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol. After 48 hours, tape the stencil to the tile to secure it, and paint the image inside the stencil with the desired colors. Lift the stencil off the tile while the paint is wet, dry the paint, and seal the tile with polyurethane topcoat.
To paint the tile, dip a small paint brush in the desired color, dab the brush on a paper towel to remove excess paint, and apply the paint to the tile. If a mottled color is desired, use a sponge to apply the paint, or use a circular motion when applying the paint to create depth of color. When painting layers of color, leave the stencil in place, and allow the paint to dry between each layer.
After the final paint addition, bake the tiles in an oven at 350 F for 30 minutes if the tiles aren't attached to the wall, or dry loose tiles with a hair dryer. Apply a thin layer of polyurethane using a lamb's wool paint roller, and allow the topcoat to dry for at least four hours before applying the second layer of topcoat.
