To use a charcoal grill, set it in a safe place, and build a pyramid of charcoal briquettes in the middle of the grill. Light the pyramid in several places, and wait at least 10 minutes. Spread the charcoal, put the cooking grill in place and test the temperature of the grill before cooking.
- Place the grill in a safe place
Place the grill on a sturdy, nonflammable surface.
- Build a pyramid of charcoal
Arrange the charcoal briquettes in the bottom of the grill in a pyramid shape. If the briquettes are not the easy-light variety, soak them with lighter fluid.
- Light the charcoal
Light the charcoal pyramid in several places with a match or lighter.
- Wait for 10 to 15 minutes
Wait for 10 to 15 minutes until the charcoal is uniformly covered with ash.
- Spread the charcoal
Use a stick to spread the charcoal evenly across the bottom of the grill.
- Put the cooking grill in place
Set the cooking grill in place at the top of the unit.
- Test the temperature
Hold your hand an inch above the grill. If you can hold it there for a couple of seconds, it is high heat. Five or six seconds represents medium heat. Closer to 10 seconds is low heat. If the fire is too hot, wait for the coals to die down before cooking.
- Shut down the grill
After cooking your food on the grill, shut the air vents, and close the lid.
