Due to privacy laws, individual apartment units are usually not protected by a security system installed by an apartment complex. Some apartment buildings provide intercoms in units so that tenants can be notified of visitors.
Apartment building security systems provide general security and surveillance monitoring for tenants. Security systems are normally placed in areas where tenants don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy. For instance, video cameras may be installed to monitor building entrances. Camera surveillance is also allowed in building lobbies, hallways, stairwells and vestibules. A keyless lock system may be used to restrict building access to tenants. Apartment dwellers who wish to increase security have the option of installing a wireless security system inside a unit.
