An electronic component is a device in an electronic system that affects the electrons in a certain way. Components of an electrical system are classified as either active, passive or electromechanical. An electronic system also includes numerous sub-components.
An active component requires an external source of energy. After receiving the external energy, they can amplify the power and inject it into a circuit. Active components include transistors, vacuum tubes and diodes.
A passive component accepts and stores energy in the form of voltage. Resistors, capacitors, inductors and transformers are all passive components.
Electromechanical components use moving parts to carry out electrical operations. They include piezoelectric devices, crystals and resonators.
