Some types of homemade ant traps include traps using boric acid, also known as borax, and food grade Diatomaceous Earth, a substance made from plants. The borax traps work against house ants, while the DE kills and neutralizes carpenter ants in and outside the home.
One common way to use the borax is by filling a bottle cap with one part borax and three parts powdered sugar. Some users substitute peanut butter for the powdered sugar. To keep pets safe, users sometimes mix the borax and sugar with water and dip a cotton ball into the mixture. The ball then gets placed into a dish and set near where ants enter the home.
The DE simply gets dusted around the home, outside or directly into a carpenter ant nest, and it is safe for humans and pets.
