Many sanitation companies recognize New Year's Day as a holiday and delay trash pickup that week, including in Los Angeles, California, Des Moines, Iowa and Providence, Rhode Island. These locations also delay pick up for Labor Day, Christmas Day and Independence Day, among other holidays.
Cities postpone waste collection by one day during weeks with a holiday, and may even opt to collect trash on the weekend. Waste collection does not change if New Year's or another holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. Residents can typically call their local waste collection departments if the department misses their trash pick up after a holiday.
