Highly-rated mulches are mainly organic mulches such as pine tree nuggets, eucalyptus chips, dried shredded leaves and dry grass clippings. Experts advise against using rubber mulches because they aren't biodegradable and are significantly more expensive than organic options.
Dried grass clippings are widely considered to be the best mulch material as long as they are fully dried and are herbicide free. Green grass clippings should be left outside to air dry until they turn brown before they are used as mulch material.
Disease prone plants such as tomatoes, fruit trees and lilacs should receive premium compost mulch, such as "LeafGro", which can be purchased from local home gardening stores.
