About half of the portable and console air purifiers on the market carry the brand names of Holmes and Honeywell, according to Consumer Reports. In addition to these two leaders, consumers prefer air purifiers made by Blueair, Germ Guardian, Hunter, Whirlpool, GE, Oreck, and the private-label brands, Kenmore and Idylis.
In February 2014, the best selling air purifier on Amazon was a Honeywell model. Units by Holmes, Blueair and Whirlpool also made the list, along with purifiers by Germ Guardian, which generated the best user reviews.
Hunter is a brand made popular by the Home Shopping Network and is also available at Walmart. Kenmore air purifiers can be purchased at Sears or Kmart, while Idylis is a brand found exclusively at Lowe's. Oreck air purifiers can be found online, particularly through eBay, but are primarily available through an authorized Oreck dealer.
Consumer Reports fails to mention Winix air purifiers, but the brand is a top seller with outstanding reviews at both Lowe's and Home Depot. In addition to the exclusive Idylis line, the most popular brands purchased by Lowe's customers include Blueair, Honeywell and Winix. Home Depot shoppers prefer the same top brands, with Honeywell and Winix models selling most often, followed closely by Blueair.
