Tune up your air conditioning system by replacing the filters, clearing dirt and debris away from the outside condensing unit and rinsing the unit with a garden hose. These maintenance activities are simple steps the homeowner can take to extend the life of the air conditioning system.
Clean filters allow an air conditioning system to run more efficiently. Establish a schedule for cleaning or replacing the filters to lower energy bills and prevent costly repairs. Clean reusable filters at least four times per year, or purchase new ones to replace the dirty filters. Several types of filters are available to meet your needs at varying price and quality levels.
Dirt and debris can interfere with the operation of the outside condensing unit. Disconnect the unit from the power supply, and remove the cover. Vacuum away debris on the condenser fins, taking care not to crush the fins. Inspect the unit for further debris, gently vacuuming it up before replacing the cover and reconnecting the unit to the power supply. Check the area around the condensing unit for leaves, twigs and other debris. Rake the debris away from the unit, and clean the unit by gently spraying it with a garden hose.
