When painting tile, purchase a tile painting kit to ensure the paint adheres to the surface of the tile. Use the list that is included in the kit to gather the necessary tools for the project. Before applying the paint, aggressively sand the tile surface with sandpaper, and clean the tiles and grout thoroughly with household cleaner. To help prevent wrinkling and peeling, do not expose the tiles to water until the paint is fully cured.Continue Reading
For a smooth, even finish, apply the paint with a spray gun. Follow the instructions in the tile refinishing kit carefully to achieve optimum results. Epoxy paint is typically recommended when painting tile, but semi-gloss or high-gloss paint is also an option when painting tile that isn't frequently exposed to water or high traffic.
To paint with semi- or high-gloss paint, apply a urethane-based bonding primer to the tile after sanding it. Paint the tile, allow it to dry, and apply several coats of water-based urethane topcoat. Allow the topcoat to dry between layers.
Do not use water-based paint or water-based topcoat in bathrooms or other areas with high humidity. If necessary, use filler or epoxy to repair damaged pieces of tile. Allow the filler to cure for two to three days before continuing the project.Learn more about Home Maintenance
