Before cutting the fabric, wash and dry it to prevent shrinkage, and wash and dry the trim. Use the size of the pillow form as a guide to cut the fabric. Add 1/4 to 1/2 inch to the measurements to allow for the seams. To make a washable pillow cover, sew a zipper on one side of the cover. To prewash trim, soak the trim in warm water for several minutes, and hang the trim until it is dry. For a snug fit on a soft pillow form, cut the fabric to the same size as the pillow form without adding a seam allowance.
When using very firm pillow forms, add 1 inch to the length and width of the fabric for the seam allowance. Beginning crafters can use cotton or cotton blend fabric to make the pillow cover, as these fabrics are easier to work with than some other materials.
