Tall storage cabinets should be 84 to 96 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches deep if they're in the kitchen. Regardless of the room, tall cabinets that aren't too deep are more practical than deeper versions.
The ideal height and width of tall cabinets depends on where they're placed and the space available. If there is wasted wall space above an existing half cabinet, adding another cabinet above it adds storage without using up extra space. In the kitchen, tall cabinets are usually pantry cupboards, since they keep food and cooking supplies available in one place. Pantry cabinets are more accessible with revolving shelves, pull-out trays and storage racks hung on the doors.
Deep cabinets tend to waste space and efficiency, because rear items are hard to reach and difficult to see. A better option is to have a large number of shallow shelves. Sliding doors that run on gliders are space-efficient and provide better accessibility to deep cabinets. In addition, floor-to-ceiling cabinets on either side of doors or windows give rooms a balanced appearance and provide ample storage. Place tall cabinets where you need them most, such as by the washing machine if you're establishing a laundry cabinet.
