Cool weather grass should be seeded in late summer to early fall, and warm weather grass should be seeded in early spring to summer. Cool weather grass types include Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescue and Rye. Warm weather grass types include Bermuda, Zoysia and St. Augustine.
When planting grass seed, the soil should first be prepared. New lawns should have loose soil and be leveled out. Old lawns should be mowed and debris needs to be removed from the area. Grass seed must be planted evenly because too many seeds planted close together can cause the grass to grow weak or thin. After the seeds are planted, they should be covered with 1/4 inch of soil. Grass seeds require frequent watering to encourage growth and keep the roots moist.
