Wash colorfast dark clothing in cold water (between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit) to minimize color fading. Test individual items for color transfer by pressing a dry white cloth into a pre-moistened spot, and include an old white cotton item in the wash to test the colorfastness of the load.
Wash dark colors together with the right amount of detergent, because soap residue fades colors and breaks down fabrics. Dry dark clothing with the appropriate heat setting or on a rack to minimize fading and extend the life of the garment. Check individual garment labels for the appropriate bleach type to use.
