The pocket door installation process involves preparation and component attachment steps. Before installation, read instructions from the manufacturer to get an overview of the process and what it entails.
Step one of the process is preparation. In this step, remove the existing drywall, studs, plates and sills. Construct a rough opening for the door jamb, or modify the existing wall to fit the rough opening dimensions provided by the manufacturer.
Step two involves attaching the header and track. Cut the header and track assembly using a hacksaw and install it on the top jamb using fasteners. Attach the hanging brackets to the top of the door and slide the wheels to the track. Ensure the track is level so that the door rolls easily.
Step three is door installation. Attach the door to the wheels and dip the hanging brackets on the pins that extend from the wheels. Install the guide at the bottom of the door to ensure the door operates without rubbing. Adjust the hanging brackets until the door is straight, then install the pocket door handle and lock.
Step four is attaching the drywall. Hang the drywall to cover the area behind the open pocket door. Finish joints with drywall tape and several coats of the drywall compound.
The fifth and last step is the installation of door guides. Measure, cut and install the guide around the door starting with the header then the side jambs.
