Shake-Away, a commercial cat repellent, is a powder that smells like the urine of foxes, bobcats and coyotes, which are natural predators of cats. Cats dislike the smell of plants such as rue, lavender, pennyroyal and Coleus canina.
Cats don't like the smell of citrus fruits. Placing cotton balls soaked in a mix of citrus essential oils and water around flowerbeds or gardens helps keep cats away from these areas. Other essential oils that deter cats are peppermint, citronella, lavender and lemongrass.
Blood-meal fertilizer and moth balls are also cat deterrents; however, moth balls are toxic to cats and other animals. Placing moth balls in a jar with holes in the lid is an effective and safer method of using moth balls to repel cats.
