Programmable thermostats can save you money because they allow you to set multiple settings for heating and cooling. You can program different temperatures for when you are at home, at work or away for an extended period. They come in 7-day, 5-1-1 day and 5-2 day models.
The 7-day model allows for separate programming each day. Set the thermostat to turn off your HVAC system when you leave for work and back on when you are due home. Settings can be changed to account for differences in weekday and weekend schedules.
The 5-1-1 day model lets you program a weekday schedule and a separate schedule for Saturday and Sunday. This works well for people with a set weekday schedule and varied activities on the weekend. The 5-2 day model lets you set a weekday schedule and a weekend schedule. These two types allow as many as four different settings for each day.
Programmable thermostats have easy-to-read digital screens, and most have a battery backup that remembers your settings in case of a power failure. High-end models also use a smartphone app to send messages advising the owner of the need for filter changes, as well as severe fluctuations in local temperatures.
