How Do You Set up New Service With PG&E?

To start residential service with PG&E, call 1-800-PGE-5000 (1-800-743-5000), and to start business service, call 1-800-468-4743. For business service, you need the business's Federal Tax ID, or for sole proprietors a Social Security number, the business' service address and location of the meter. Residential customers must provide contact information and a Social Security number for billing purposes.

  1. Gather all needed documents

For residential customers, PG&E wants information about the service location, including the address and your relationship to the address, i.e., if you lease or own the property. Have a pen and paper ready to write down where to send any documents they ask for. You must also provide some sort of information for a credit check and/or pay a deposit, so have your Social Security number ready. Business customers must also provide the Federal Tax ID, if available, and the location of the meter for the business.

  2. Call PG&E

The residential number and business number are different. Make sure you call the correct number for the type of service you wish to instate.

  3. Provide PG&E with any and all information

While talking to PG&E, answer all questions as thoroughly as possible. Write down addresses to send documents and payments. PG&E has a privacy policy to protect your information.
