To properly set a table, make sure to position dinner plates in the center of the place settings and arrange the flatware around the plate. Further, napkins should be placed under the forks or on the plate.
For a basic table setting, the fork should go to the left of the plate, while the knife and spoon should go to the right of it. Face the sharp edge of the knife towards the plate and place the spoon to the right of the knife. Also, place the water glass above the knife.
In the case of an informal dinner or luncheon, place the salad fork to the left of the dinner fork. If salad isn't being served, the salad fork can be set as a dessert fork by placing it to the right of the dinner fork. If soup is being served, place the soup bowl on the plate and the soup spoon to the right of the beverage spoon. A coffee cup can also go above the spoons with the handle facing right. Additionally, bread plates should be placed above the forks.
For a formal dinner, place wine glasses to the left of the coffee cup. For a fancier look, place a charger under the dinner plate.
