To select the proper door size for a door frame, measure the height and width of the old door. If an existing door is not available, measure the jamb.
Doors usually come in standardized sizes, so replacing an existing door is fairly easy. To select the proper door size for the frame, use the following steps.
- Remove the old door
- Measure the old door
- Select a new door
- Resize the new door
- Install the new door
To remove the door from the frame, remove the hinge pins with a hammer and nail. Open the door and carefully lift it off of the hinges.
Measure both the height and the width of the old door.
Select a new door with the same dimensions as the old door. If the old door was a standard size, this should be easy to do. Simply skip the next step and install the door.
If the old door was not a standard size, it may be necessary to resize the new door. To do so, mark the dimensions of the old door on the new door with a pencil. Use a utility knife to score the dimensions onto the door. Use a circular saw to cut the door down to size.
Fit the new door on the existing hinges on the frame.
If an existing door is not available, measure the jamb. The jamb is the frame of the door. Measure the inner dimensions of the jamb and select a door that fits into the space.
