Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or pitahaya, is a tropical fruit with a growing season of June to late December. It is mildly sweet and low in calories. The fruit grows best close to the equator.
Dragon fruit is the fruit of the Hylocereus genus of cactus. It is high in vitamin C, phosphorus and calcium. It contains antioxidants and has been shown to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. The fruit can weigh from 150 to 600 grams, with some dragon fruit reaching one kilogram. Dragon fruit is common in South America, Asia and the Middle East. In the United States, it is grown in the Hawaiian Islands and southern Florida.
