The standard plan covers mechanical or electrical failures, though customers may also purchase protection against accidental damage. The length of a Samsung Protection Plus plan ranges from one to five years, as of 2015. Depending on the specific terms of the warranty, a deductible may be included, meaning the customer must pay a certain amount out of pocket before benefits begin. To initiate a claim for service, the customer must call Samsung customer service during regular business hours.

Once a claim is filed, Samsung may offer one of three service methods: home service, depot service or replacement. In a home service, either a technician comes to the customer's home to service the appliance or Samsung sends a part to be replaced by the customer. If a technician comes to customer's home, an adult must be in the home. For a depot service, the customer sends the appliance to a service center with a prepaid shipping label provided by Samsung. If Samsung decides to replace an appliance, it may be replaced with a similar appliance, a cash payment or a gift card.
