Remove the smell of burned food from a microwave oven by wiping the oven with a vinegar solution, heating the solution, allowing the steam to loosen any smoky residue, and using a sponge to remove the smoky coating. Vinegar helps to eliminate the smell at its source.
- Wipe with vinegar
Pour distilled white vinegar into a bowl. Use a clean sponge to wipe all interior surfaces of the microwave with vinegar. Remove the glass turntable, and clean it and the area under it.
- Steam with more vinegar
Pour a cup of vinegar into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat the vinegar on high for 90 seconds or until it begins to steam. Keep the door of the microwave closed, and allow the vinegar to steam the inside of the oven for several minutes to loosen any cooked-on smoke from the surface.
- Finish the cleaning process
Remove the bowl from the oven, and dip the sponge into the warm vinegar solution. Wash the inside surfaces again to remove any of the residue the steam treatment loosens from the surface. Use a paper towel to dry the inside of the oven, and wash and dry the outside of the oven in vinegar to remove any greasy buildup.
